Virginia has 11 mosquito control districts operating throughout the Commonwealth that monitor mosquito populations, engage in mosquito control activities, and test vector species for diseases of human importance like West Nile virus (WNV), which is our most reported endemic mosquito-borne disease in Virginia.
Positive mosquito reports of WNV indicate that the virus is active in the environment, something that we generally see in the late summer and early fall in Virginia.
Currently, Virginia is reporting six human cases of WNV. Take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones from mosquito bites by using an EPA-approved insect repellant, wearing protective clothing, and by removing any opportunities for mosquito breeding sites on or around your property.
