Virginia Department of Health Provides Tips to Stay Warm, Healthy During Power Outage<\/strong><\/p>\n

RICHMOND, Va. \u2013<\/strong>\u00a0 The Virginia Department of Health shares tips for staying safe, warm, and healthy when the power is out.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the forecast for extremely cold temperatures and wind chill, frostbite and hypothermia are real concerns, especially if you lose power in your home,\u201d said Virginia Health Commissioner B. Cameron Webb, MD, JD.<\/strong> \u201cNow is the time to prepare! Plan ahead to ensure that you and your loved ones have safe ways to stay warm, keep food and medicines at proper temperatures, and stay hydrated. The Virginia Department of Health is here to help you with tips to keep your family safe and happy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Staying warm. <\/strong><\/a>If you lose power, the priority is to stay dry and warm to prevent frostbite<\/a> and hypothermia<\/a>. Use extra blankets, sleeping bags, and warm winter coats to stay warm. Make sure you cover your head, fingers, and toes.<\/p>\n

Use alternative heating sources: a fireplace that is up to code with plenty of dry wood or a gas log fireplace, Portable space heaters, or kerosene heaters.<\/p>\n

Keep heat sources at least three feet away from drapes, furniture, bedding, or other flammable materials. Never cover your space heater. Ensure that you properly ventilate emergency heat sources to prevent carbon monoxide.\u00a0<\/a> Do not use generators indoors.<\/p>\n

Food Safety<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

In the case of a power outage<\/a>, it\u2019s important to take careful precautions to ensure food safety. Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed. If the doors stay closed, food will stay safe up to four hours in a refrigerator, 24 hours in a half-full freezer, and 48 hours in a full freezer.<\/p>\n

If you must remove food, put it in a cooler with frozen gel packs or dry ice to keep it cold. Refrigerated food must stay at a temperature of 40\u00b0F or lower, and frozen food must stay at a temperature of 0\u00b0F or lower.<\/p>\n

\u00a0When power returns<\/a>: Thawed food can usually be eaten if it is still \u201crefrigerator cold\u201d (40\u00b0F or below). Discard any perishable food (such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, or leftovers) that has been above 40\u00b0F for two hours or more. Never taste food to know if it is safe to eat. When in doubt, throw it out. Do not operate charcoal grills or propane camping stoves indoors. Eating healthy meals will help keep your body temperature warm. Here are tips on breastfeeding,<\/a> feeding infants,<\/a> and preparing and storing powdered formula<\/a> during a power outage.<\/p>\n

Stay Hydrated<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s important to stay hydrated even during the cold to prevent hypothermia<\/a>. The extreme cold can affect your water pipes.\u00a0 Leave all water taps slightly open so they drip continuously. Open cabinet doors under the kitchen and bathroom sinks so warm air can reach the pipes. If tap water isn\u2019t available, use bottled water. Avoid alcoholic or caffeinated beverages. They cause your body to lose heat faster. Drink warm beverages or broth to stay warm.<\/p>\n

Medication<\/strong><\/p>\n

Consult your healthcare provider for your specific needs. In general, throw out refrigerated medicine when the power is out for a day or more, unless your healthcare provider or the drug's label says otherwise.<\/p>\n

Remember to stay warm during these extremely cold temperatures. If you notice signs of frostbite<\/a> and hypothermia<\/a> , seek medical attention immediately. If you have any immediate needs, contact call 2-1-1 or visit 211virginia.org<\/a><\/p>\n

Here are some ways to get involved during Suicide Prevention Month: \u00b7 Get familiar with the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.<\/a> \u00b7 Link up with a local American Suicide Prevention Foundation Chapter<\/a>. \u00b7 Take part in an Out of the Darkness Walk<\/a> or start one. \u00b7 Volunteer with the Virginia National Alliance on Mental Illness<\/a>. \u00b7 Connect your college or K-12 school to the Campus Suicide Prevention Center of Virginia<\/a>. \u00b7 Join the Suicide Prevention Interagency Advisory Group<\/a>. \u00b7 Ask your provider or hospital system to connect with the Virginia Zero Suicide Hub<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Promote dignity through connection. When people feel respected, heard, and valued, they are more likely to seek help. Take the free Counseling on Access to Lethal Means (CALM)<\/a> training to learn about limiting access to guns, medications, and other items that could cause harm. You can also access free, custom guidelines and resources from Lock & Talk Virginia<\/a>. \ud83d\udde3If you observe any of the following wild bird occurrences, please notify DWR by calling the Virginia Wildlife Conflict Helpline at 855-571-9003 or emailing wildlifehealth@dwr.virginia.gov.
\n- Five or more dead vultures, waterfowl, shorebirds, or seabirds in the same area within five days
\n- Sick or dead eagles, hawks, owls, or turkeys, excluding carcasses found on the road
\n- Ten or more dead wild birds of any other species in the same area within five days
\n\ud83d\udde3If domestic poultry (such as backyard flocks) or other farm birds exhibit signs of avian influenza (ranging from sneezing, coughing and ruffled feathers to sudden and high numbers of bird losses), bird owners should consult their local veterinary professional and notify state or federal animal health officials.
\n\ud83d\udde3Virginia backyard flocks or commercial poultry owners should report unusual poultry illnesses or deaths to the State Veterinarian\u2019s Office at 804.692.0601 or at vastatevet@vdacs.virginia.gov or call the USDA\u2019s toll-free at 866.536.7593.
\n\ud83d\udde3If you have domestic birds or dairy cattle that appear ill, unexpected death or signs of avian influenza, please consider wearing personal protective equipment when in close proximity or handling sick or dead birds. \u2013Smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death and disease in the nation, according to the Virginia Department of Health\u2019s (VDH) Tobacco Control Program.
\nMore people, both men and women, in the United States die from lung cancer than any other type of cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for approximately 85% of all cases.<\/p>\n
