Visit the links below to learn more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><strong>Cardiovascular System<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Congenital Heart Defects<\/strong> (CHDs) (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/heart-defects\/about\/?CDC\">CDC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/complications\/congenital-heart-defects.aspx\">MOD<\/a>) are the most common type of birth defect. For more information about different types of CHDs, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnatichildrens.org\/patients\/child\/encyclopedia\/defects\">Heart Encyclopedia<\/a> from the Cincinnati Children\u2019s Heart Institute<\/li>\n<li>About 1 in 4 babies with a CHD have a critical CHD that requires medical intervention soon after birth. Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/critical-congenital-heart-disease\/\">newborn screening<\/a> for critical CHDs in Virginia.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mendedhearts.org\/about-us\/about-mended-little-hearts\/\">Mended Little Hearts<\/a> is an organization that provides peer-to-peer support for families affected by CHDs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Central Nervous System<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Neural Tube Defects <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/birth-defects\/about\/neural-tube-defects.html\">CDC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/complications\/neural-tube-defects.aspx\">MOD<\/a>) affect the development of the brain and spine and include conditions such as anencephaly, encephalocele, holoprosencephaly, and spina bifida.<\/li>\n<li>Learn more about the role of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/folicacid\/index.html\">Folic Acid<\/a> in preventing neural tube defects.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spinabifidaassociation.org\/\">Spina Bifida Association<\/a> provides additional resources for individuals affected by spina bifida.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Face and Mouth<\/strong><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/birth-defects\/about\/cleft-lip-cleft-palate.html\">CDC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/complications\/cleft-lip-and-cleft-palate.aspx\">MOD<\/a>) are birth defects that affect the development of the lip or mouth. These conditions can occur alone or together.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/acpa-cpf.org\/\">American Cleft Palate Craniofacial Association<\/a> provides additional resources for individuals affected by cleft lip, cleft palate, and other similar conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Chromosomal<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Down Syndrome<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/birthdefects\/downsyndrome.html\">(CDC <\/a>| <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/complications\/down-syndrome.aspx\">MOD<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/ncbddd\/birthdefects\/downsyndrome.html\">)<\/a> or Trisomy 21, is the most common chromosomal condition in the United States. Individuals with Down Syndrome have an extra copy of chromosome 21.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndss.org\/\">National Down Syndrome Society<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nads.org\/\">National Association for Down Syndrome<\/a> provide resources for individuals with Down Syndrome.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Musculoskeletal<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gastroschisis<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/birth-defects\/about\/gastroschisis.html\">CDC<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/complications\/gastroschisis.aspx\">MOD<\/a>) is a birth defect of the abdominal wall that causes the intestines to be located outside of the body at birth. See additional resources from the <a href=\"https:\/\/averysangels.org\/\">Global Gastroschisis Foundation<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/birth-defects\/about\/limb-reduction-defects.html\">Limb Reduction Defects<\/a> affect the musculoskeletal development of the arms or legs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Prevention<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Not all birth defects can be prevented. However, there are steps that can help increase a person\u2019s chances of having a healthy baby.
