About Measles<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Measles is a highly contagious<\/span>\u00a0viral illness that\u00a0<\/span>spreads<\/span>\u00a0easily through the air when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes.<\/span> The virus can remain in the air for up to two hours after the infected person leaves the area.<\/span><\/span> Measles symptoms include a cough, runny nose, rash, and sometimes red, itchy eyes. Measles is preventable through a safe and effective MMR vaccine. Two doses of the vaccine are given to provide long-lasting protection.<\/p>\n

In 2025 and to date in 2026, Virginia has experienced an increase in\u00a0<\/span>measles<\/span>. These cases have resulted from travel (international and domestic) and household<\/span>\/close contact<\/span>\u00a0exposure (e.g., spread from one family member to another).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
