{"id":1946,"date":"2016-03-09T10:05:03","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T15:05:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/epidemiology\/?page_id=1946"},"modified":"2025-12-23T11:02:55","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T16:02:55","slug":"pharmacy-services","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/epidemiology\/pharmacy-services\/","title":{"rendered":"Pharmacy Services"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Division of Pharmacy Services (DPS) supports the Virginia Department of Health in its public health mission by providing vaccines, medications, drug information services, and biologics to other divisions within the Department of Health and to local health departments.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"OutlineContainer_with_header_double Double_Wide HeaderColor_Green\">\n<h2>About Us<\/h2>\n<p>The VDH Division of Pharmacy Services serves all the local health departments within the Commonwealth of Virginia by providing pharmaceuticals, vaccines, and biologics which enable the health departments to effectively treat communicable diseases, treat chronic diseases, and to respond to public health emergencies such as pandemic influenza, bioterrorism, and natural disasters that displace citizens with a loss of their medications.<\/p>\n<p>Pharmacy Services only provides services affiliated with state and federally assisted programs through the Virginia Department of Health. Pharmacy Services complies with all state and federal laws and is prohibited from competing against public retail entities for non-public health treatments under the federal Robinson-Patman Act.<\/p>\n<p>The services DPS provides include, but are not limited to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment or support for<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/disease-prevention\/std\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sexually transmitted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/surveillance-and-investigation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">communicable diseases<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of pharmaceuticals to HIV infected patients under the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/disease-prevention\/vamap\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia Medication Assistance Program<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of pharmaceuticals to patients infected with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/tuberculosis\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tuberculosis<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contraceptive, family planning, and prenatal services<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of pharmaceuticals in support of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/care-connection-for-children\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Care Connection for Children Program<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of pharmaceuticals in support of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/vdhlivewell\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metabolic Disorders Program<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of pharmaceuticals in support of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/bleeding-disorders-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bleeding Disorder Program<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of vaccines for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/epidemiology\/influenza-flu-in-virginia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influenza<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of vaccines for patients not eligible for the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/immunization\/vvfc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vaccines for Children Program<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of vaccines for treatment and prevention of diseases<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of vaccines for foreign travel<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/epidemiology\/naloxone\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">naloxone, fentanyl test strips,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and drug disposal bags in support of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/opioid-data\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">opioid addiction in Virginia<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of pharmaceuticals in response to natural disasters, national emergencies, and bioterrorism events<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provision of undesignated stock epinephrine and albuterol for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/epidemiology\/pharmacy-school_orders\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">K-12 schools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drug information services to local health departments<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generation of data used for community health assessment, public, and population health<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consultation and guidance to local health departments on state and federal laws that pertain to storage, distribution, and dispensing of
