It takes weeks or months to confirm a death was a drug overdose. This is because it takes time to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>complete the death investigation, including drug testing (toxicology), to determine cause of death;<\/li>\n<li>receive final cause-of-death information back from the National Center for Health Statistics; and<\/li>\n<li>get final death certificate records of Virginia residents who died out of state.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Suspected drug overdose deaths may first be assigned as \u201cpending\" on the death certificate. Those will not be on the dashboard until they are confirmed.
