Over 80% of the population\u2019s need for drinking water is served by public water systems (waterworks) regulated by the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Drinking Water (ODW).<\/p>\n<p>There are\u00a0more than <strong>1,100<\/strong> Community waterworks withdrawing water from<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>170+<\/strong> surface water intakes (about 1\/3 on lakes &amp; reservoirs, and 2\/3\u00a0on rivers &amp; streams)<\/li>\n<li><strong>1,780+<\/strong> groundwater wells<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Localities, utilities and consumers can implement\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/drinking-water\/office-of-drinking-water\/source-water-programs\/source-water-protection-program\/\">source water protection<\/a> measures to increase the sustainability of their drinking water sources by reducing or preventing contaminants from entering our streams and aquifers.<\/p>\n<p>We need to be mindful of our actions and how we can help avoid or minimize detrimental impacts to water sources.
