are more tools than ever to prevent HIV.\u00a0 Strategies include using condoms, not sharing injection equipment, and taking a pill or injectable to prevent HIV (PrEP).\u00a0 Getting tested and treated for STDs can lower your chances of getting HIV.\u00a0 Not having sex and not injecting drugs ensure that you won\u2019t get HIV.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment is Prevention!\u00a0 People living with HIV who stay on their medication and have so little virus in their body that a blood test cannot measure it, don't give HIV to a partner through sex.\u00a0 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/risk\/art\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> <\/strong>indicate there is strong evidence about treatment as prevention for other ways HIV can be transmitted, but more research is needed for other ways, including breastfeeding and injection drug use.<\/p>\n<p>Getting tested is the first step in getting on PrEP if you are HIV negative.\u00a0 Getting tested is also the first step in getting medical care to become virally suppressed if you are HIV positive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-177-1-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-177-1-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-177-1-1-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2>Abstinence<\/h2>\n<p>While there have been many strides in HIV prevention tools, abstinence is still the only 100% method to prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).\u00a0 The longer you wait to have oral, vaginal, or anal sex, the fewer sexual partners you are likely to have in your lifetime.\u00a0 Having fewer partners lowers your risk of encountering a partner who has HIV or an STD.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-177-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-177-2\" ><div id=\"pgc-177-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-177-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div id=\"condoms\" class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-177-2-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2><a 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Condoms<\/h2>\n<p>If used correctly condoms are highly effective in preventing HIV and some STDs.\u00a0 Condoms do not provide good protection against STDs that are transmitted through skin-to-skin contact.\u00a0 Gonorrhea and chlamydia are two examples.<\/p>\n<p>There are two types of condoms: male and internal (also known as female).\u00a0 It is important that you know how to use both correctly for your protection.<\/p>\n<p>For both male and internal condoms, only one condom should be used at a time.\u00a0 Using multiple condoms at one time increases friction and the likelihood that both condoms would tear.<\/p>\n<p>A new condom should be used each time a sexual encounter occurs.\u00a0 After a condom is used it should be properly disposed of.<\/p>\n<p>Even if condoms are used the right way every time you have sex, there is still a chance of getting HIV or STDs.\u00a0 For some individuals at high risk of getting or transmitting HIV or STDs, adding other prevention methods may be ideal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-177-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>A male condom, also called an external condom, is a thin layer of protection that is worn over the penis during sex.\u00a0 It is available in different materials.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Condoms made of latex provide the best protection against HIV and STDs.<\/li>\n<li>Polyurethane (plastic) condoms are a good option for those with latex allergies.\u00a0 However, they break more often than latex condoms.<\/li>\n<li>Natural membrane condoms (such as lambskin) have small holes in them.\u00a0 They DO NOT protect against STDs or HIV.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/condom-use\/index.html\">Male (external) condoms do\u2019s and don\u2019ts<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-177-4-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-177-4-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"6\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-177-4-1-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Internal Condoms<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Internal (or female condoms) are thin pouches made of a thin latex product called nitrile.\u00a0 It can be inserted into the vagina or anus for intercourse.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The internal condom can be inserted up to eight hours before intercourse.<\/li>\n<li>For vaginal sex, the inner ring should be squeezed.\u00a0 With the inner ring squeezed, put the inner ring and pouch inside of the vagina.\u00a0 After sex, twist the outer ring and carefully pull gently to remove the condom.<\/li>\n<li>For anal sex, the inner ring should be removed before insertion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-177-4-2\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-177-4-2-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"7\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-177-4-2-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Lubrication<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Lubrication, or lube, assists with HIV and STD prevention.\u00a0 It can help prevent condoms from breaking and slipping.\u00a0 Water-based and silicone-based lube is safe to use with all condoms.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Oil-based lubes and products containing oils (including hand lotions, Vaseline, and Crisco) should not be used with latex condoms.\u00a0 They can break down the latex and cause the condom to break.<\/li>\n<li>It is safe to use any type of lubricant with internal\/female condoms as they are made of nitrile.<\/li>\n<li>Lubricants containing nonoxynol-9 should not be used as it can irritate the lining of the vagina and anus.\u00a0 The irritation can increase the risk of HIV or STD infection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-177-5\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-177-5-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-177-5-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"8\" ><div so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2>Medication<\/h2>\n<p>There are currently several strategies to prevent HIV with medication.\u00a0 If you are at risk for contracting HIV, you may take a pill or injectable prior to any risk behaviors.\u00a0 This is called HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).\u00a0 If you have already potentially been exposed to HIV, you may also take medication to prevent infection.\u00a0 This is called post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).\u00a0 If the exposure is non-occupational it is called nPEP.\u00a0 <strong>PEP and nPEP must be administered within 72 hours of a potential exposure<\/strong>.\u00a0 For more information on PrEP or nPEP, visit our <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vdh.virginia.gov\/disease-prevention\/prep-and-npep\/\">PrEP and nPEP page<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, it has been proven that persons living with HIV that are on their HIV medication, and have a low number of copies of virus in their system will not transmit the virus to their HIV-negative partners sexually.\u00a0 This is called treatment as prevention, or rel=\"noopener\">CDC.gov<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-177-7\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-177-7-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-177-7-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"11\" ><div class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-177-7-0-0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2>Comprehensive Harm Reduction<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who share needles, syringes or other equipment to inject drugs, silicone or hormones are at high risk for getting HIV, hepatitis A, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.\u00a0 Reusing needles can also lead to infections such as skin abscesses and endocarditis (a heart infection). Comprehensive Harm Reduction programs (also called needle exchange or syringe services) help people reduce the negative health impacts of drug use.
